Impact Zones features immersive works by North Carolina-based artist April Flanders. Flanders uses printmaking, vinyl, and papercutting in her work and will create two multi-layered, large-scale installations unique to the Hunter Museum. These pieces will explore the interaction of native and invasive species through the lens of forest and river ecosystems specific to Tennessee, which are impacted daily by both natural and external forces. Flanders’ art practice employs a bold use of color, texture, and form to draw the viewer’s attention to the delicate equilibrium of our ecosystems.
April Flanders is a studio artist living and making in the mountains of Western North Carolina. A keen naturalist, her work has been featured in solo and group shows at museums and galleries, including the Katzen Museum in Washington, D.C., the Center for the Book Arts in New York, and the Global Print International in Douro, Portugal. Her work is in many public collections, including the Asheville Museum of Science, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Tucson Museum of Art. Flanders holds a Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University, and she is a professor of studio art at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
