About the Exhibition

A member of the wealthy East coast elite, Edna Pennypacker Stauffer was swept into the glittering world of artists, writers, actors, and socialites who constituted café society in New York City from the 1920s to the 1940s. This fashionable, globe-trotting set used the latest modes of transportation – luxury steamships, air travel, cars, and streamlined trains – to holiday in glamorous cities around the world as well as exotic locations, elegant resorts, and artist colonies. News photographers snapped pictures of the beautiful people who visited the more famous places. But Stauffer didn’t follow the media’s lead. Instead, she sought to create images of the actual locales uninhabited by tourists and natives alike.
