Janet Fish: Place in Time
Various Artists
Janet Fish, Parakeet and Tropical Fruit, 1991, oil on canvas, 36 x 42 in. Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art (Gift of Margot Perot and Family, 2025)
This five-decade retrospective of the eminent American realist painter highlights the profound influence of the artist’s Bermuda upbringing on her artistic development, connecting her vibrant island environment to her mastery of light and color.
From the beginning, Fish focused on commonplace objects, insisting that her subject matter—glasses, fruits covered in supermarket cellophane, or liquid filled containers, was unimportant. For her meaning was determined by tone, gesture, color, light, an¸d scale. Through a carefully curated selection of works, the exhibition traces Fish’s evolution from early experimentations to her signature, luminous still life paintings filled with reflective glassware, fruit, and domestic objects.
Organized by the Hunter Museum of American Art in collaboration with the Janet Fish Foundation, Inc. The exhibition originated at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.
