Layering Meaning in Black Identity with Photographer Woodson Carpenter

Join local photographer and poet Woodson Carpenter for a hands-on workshop inspired by Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory, currently on view at the Hunter.

The workshop begins with a guided walkthrough of Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory. From there, participants will turn to their own archives, bringing a photograph from their life—printed or digital—to use as a starting point. After swapping images, participants will respond to someone else’s photograph through paint, pencil, poetry, prose, or whatever form feels honest. Everyone will leave with something created in community.

Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory is curated by Cheryl Finley, Ph.D., and Deborah Willis, Ph.D., and originated as a FotoFocus exhibition at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, on the occasion of the 2022 FotoFocus Biennial. The traveling exhibition is organized by Curatorial Exhibitions, Pasadena, California.
