Art Wise: Deborah Willis, Ph.D.

Join acclaimed artist and curator Dr. Deborah Willis for an Art Wise talk at the Hunter Museum. A MacArthur Fellow and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University, Dr. Willis is one of the nation’s leading historians of African American photography and visual culture. She is also a featured artist and co-curator of Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory, the Hunter’s current exhibition, which explores the ways artists use photography, film, and other media to preserve and reimagine history.

This is a special opportunity to hear directly from one of the most influential voices in contemporary photography and African American visual culture – don't miss it!

Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory is curated by Cheryl Finley, Ph.D., and Deborah Willis, Ph.D., and originated as a FotoFocus exhibition at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, on the occasion of the 2022 FotoFocus Biennial. The traveling exhibition is organized by Curatorial Exhibitions, Pasadena, California.
