Dorothea Langes America

Dec 17th (2011) - Apr 22nd, 2012

Dorothea Lange’s America focuses on the work of legendary documentary photographer Dorothea Lange.  Her photos such as Migrant Mother and White Angel Breadline have become iconic images of Depression America.

In 1918 Lange travelled to San Francisco and opened a portrait studio where for over a decade she catered to the professional class and monied elite. But with the crash of 1929 she turned her attention to the many faces of America – young and old, urban and rural, native-born and immigrant – as they dealt with unprecedented hardship.  The exhibition also includes work by other leading photographers of the time – such as  Walker Evans, Ben Shahn and Mike Disfarmer -- to put her work in context.

The exhibition is organized by art2art.
