Dr. Kathleen Wheatley will lead a lunchtime talk focusing on strategic management.
The Broad Strokes of Strategy
What is strategic management? It is the art and science of creating a plan for an organization to achieve its short and long term goals. Dr. Wheatley will lead the group through the basics of strategy, emphasizing the need for flexibility, creativity, and the “bird’s eye view.” The process of getting work done will also be a focus of this session, highlighting the effects of organizational design and culture on performance.
Kathleen K. Wheatley holds the George M. Clark Professorship in Management Policy at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She earned her PhD with a concentration in Strategic Management and support in Innovation Management from Syracuse University. She also holds a BS in Bioengineering, a MS in Engineering Management, and Certification in Law, Technology and Management. Prior to her interest in business her main focus was on neuroscience and sensory research where she studied the lateral eye of the horseshoe crab. Dr. Wheatley made the switch to the business school in order to study strategy as a way to put all the pieces of technology together--engineering/production, marketing/commercialization, and law. Dr. Wheatley’s research interests include strategy implementation, innovation management, new product development, diversity, and compensation.
