Classes and Workshops

The Hunter Museum offers a variety of classes and workshops for adults through the fall, winter and spring. Explore a new hobby, brush up on old skills, and socialize with new and like minded people.

Hands-On Hunter Workshops

Explore a work of art, an artist's style, a technique or process in greater depth through HandsOn Hunter mini-workshops. Each HandsOn Hunter will focus on a work of art from the Hunter's permanent collection or temporary exhibitions. Join the Hunter on select Thursday evenings this fall for explorations into quilt making, printing, and color.

HandsOn Hunter: Photography and the Civil War
Thursday, August 18, 6-8 p.m.
$20 members, $25 non-members

Join photographer Shane Darwent and Chief Curator Ellen Simak in Between the States: Photographs of the American Civil War from the George Eastman House Collection currently on view at the Hunter Museum. Discover photo processes used by some of the world's first war photographers. Get your hands dirty with a similar process for developing your own images. Participants will learn about wet plate collodian photography and albumen printing. Register.

HandsOn Hunter: Casting the Figure
Thursday, September 15, 6-8 p.m.
$20 members, $25 non-members

Chattanooga newcomer Jennifer Rubin visits the Hunter to lead a workshop on plaster casts of the human form. Finding similarities between her work and that of George Segal found in the Hunter Museum's collection, Jennifer will share this diverse medium with you. Join the Hunter for this gallery talk and hands-on studio experience and walk away with a cast of part or yourself and endless possibilities. Reigster.

HandsOn Hunter: Clay Sketch-pots with Mary Lynn Portera

$20 members, $25 non-members

Join Mary Lynn Portera and Curator Nandini Makrandi for a deeper look at the ceramic work of Beverly Semmes in celebration of National Craft Month. Nandini Makrandi will lead a short talk in the special exhibition Beverly Semmes: Starcraft before turning the floor over to ceramicist Mary Lynn Portera who will demonstrate clay coiling techniques evident in Semmes ceramic work. Participant will create their own clay vessel using the work of Mary Lynn Portera and Beverly Semmes as inspiration. Register.

HandsOn Hunter: Color in art and in life
Thursday, November 10, 6-8 p.m.
$20 members, $25 non-members

Join Elea Blake Cosmetics personal color expert Darin Wright and Hunter Curator of Education Adera Causey for an evening of color exploration. We'll spend time in the galleries learning about color theory and the way 20th century artists have used color to express meaning and emotion. Then Darin Wright will share how you can use the basic principles color theory to uncover your most flattering color palette. Register.

Artist Workspace

Are you an artist interested in sharing your craft with others? Rent one of the Hunter's studio classrooms and host a workshop of your own design. Studio spaces are available for $60 per 2 hour session on select Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year.
