Known for his introspective, psychologically penetrating images of American life, Edward Hopper's architectural images capture this same feeling. This watercolor of an abandoned coastal house was likely painted in Gloucester, Massachusetts at a time when Hopper worked almost exclusively in watercolor. Even though the brushstrokes are looser, he maintains the stark forms and bold lighting of his oil paintings that reinforce the isolated feel of the scene.
