Analysis

Like other Abstract Expressionists, Hans Hofmann used color and texture rather than recognizable, realistic images as the subject of his art. A German native, he studied with European abstract artists before coming to America to teach art. Many of leading artists in the 1950s, such as Helen Frankenthaler and Louise Nevelson, studied with him.
