As a young student, Robert Henri studied in Paris and then later at the Pennsylvania Academy with American impressionists. This influence can be seen here with this painting's light palette, patchy brushstrokes and airy scene. In his mature work, Henri maintained this painting style, but darkened his colors. More importantly, he advocated portraying realistic views of urban American life, and became the leading figure in a group of artists often called the Ashcan School.
