Analysis

Childe Hassam was one of America's foremost Impressionist artists. In The French Tea Garden, the woman's comfortable seat, fine clothing, lush surrounding garden, the terra-cotta tea set before her and her relaxed activity all indicate a refinement and a mark of wealth. Such paintings are very different from other artists at the time, such as William Glackens or George Luks, who showed the everyday life of the immigrant or more middle class American.
