Analysis

Blakelock has fascinated generations of viewers with his mysterious landscape paintings. In the 1870s, Blakelock began to evolve from more factual images to more introspective and personal interpretations of landscape, much like the work of his contemporaries George Inness and Albert Pinkham Ryder. His work became almost abstract with its dark colors and overall lacy pattern of foliage.
