Analysis
Known primarily for his genre scenes of every day frontier life, George Caleb Bingham also painted portraits. Portraiture could be a lucrative source of income for artists and Bingham did over one thousand portraits during his life. This painting and its pendant image of the spouse shows Bingham's relatively formulaic approach to this type of painting as he uses stock backgrounds and presents figures with stiff poses.
The Hunter also owns one of Bingham's rare landscape paintings, Landscape with Deer.
