East Wing: Impressionism and City Scenes (Gallery 11)
This scene, created near Dublin, Ireland, was created late in James Abbott McNeill Whistler's life. The American-born Whistler by then had spent most of his life in Europe and had become known for his eccentric character and his interest in tonal ethereal landscapes. Typical of his late paintings, it is primarily horizontal done in creamy tones with only the center sailboat giving a sense of depth.
