Fall, it's Officially Here

I wouldn't say summer is a slow time, at least not in the Education Studios which are abuzz with summer campers, but it is a little less busy around the galleries and in the office. The slower summers give us folks in education a little time to plan for fall and spring. This year's studio class schedule for adults and children is shaping up to be one of the busiest on record!

Part I of Charlie Newton's Portraiture class for adults, Capturing a Likeness is underway with a diverse group of artists. Parts II and III of the class are still open and will cover shade and finally color in portraiture. If painting is more your thing, be sure to check out Morris Mitchell's Intermediate to Advanced Painting (oil and acrylic), which starts later this fall. You can find our winter and spring line up of adult classes on the Museum's Web site too. Classes after the holidays include watercolor and assemblage to name a few.

I'm particularly excited about a partnership workshop with Ignis Glass at the beginning of next month. Bruce Benfield and Juanita Tumelaire are working on an innovative printmaking technique that combines glass etching with the traditional printing press. They have designed the three day workshop, Cool Prints, around their printmaking technique and the New York Cool special exhibition. The workshop combines the innovation of the New York Cool artists with that of two of Chattanooga's finest contemporary artists. Participants in the workshop will have a private tour of the New York Cool special exhibition with the curator of education; will design and sand blast their own glass plate; and print several additions of their design using a printing press.

Camp in domeThere is lot's to do at the Hunter Museum for kids too. Art Club: Open Studio, our children's art class, meets every Saturday morning from now until mid December. Art Club kids have the opportunity to explore a variety of mediums and styles over the course of the program making this class a good fit for children who enjoy making art as well as those who don't have the opportunity to create in school. There are several more specialized children's programs taking place at the Hunter this fall as well. Pre-K Days, Home School Workshops, and Girl Scout Days are filling up the calendar. Be sure to check the Hunter's event calendar to see what's happening at the Museum. Or follow the Hunter on Twitter or Facebook for daily up-dates.

If you visited the Museum this summer, taken a class in the past, or attended an event that particularly sticks out in your mind, please share your experience with us and other readers. Let us know how we're doing!

Hoping to see you in the studio soon,

Erin Noseworthy
Manager of Multimedia Interpretive Programs
