In April, 19 members of the Hunter Museum set out for an exciting excursion to the beautiful city of Savannah, Ga. This trip included a weekend stay at the newly renovated Inn at Ellis Square, located in the heart of the historic district and within walking distance of the Riverfront Plaza and River Street. Our visit included a tour of the Telfair Museum of Art, Telfair’s Jebson Center and Owens-Thomas House and lunch at the famous haunted Pirates House. Everyone had a wonderful time exploring, shopping and eating lots of delicious seafood.
Our next trip is to Atlanta on Wednesday, October 14. We'll explore the new exhibiton, Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius, at the High Museum. This exhibit features more than 50 works, including 25 sketches and studies by da Vinci, some of which will be on view in the United States for the first time. It also features work by Donatello, Verrocchio and Rustici.
After our visit to the High we will travel to Marietta where we will enjoy lunch at Willie Rae’s, a fun-filled eatery located on Marietta’s historic town square. After lunch there will be time for sightseeing and shopping in some of the upscale shops, galleries and cozy antique stores located along the square.
Our last stop is to the studio of the late Edward Moultrop, a self-taught wood turner who was considered a master craftsman and artist. His son Philip, also a wood turner, will give our group a tour of the workshop and demonstrate the process of wood turning, (a process in which a piece of wood is spun on a lathe and shaped with a tool drawn again it). Edward Moultrop’s Bowl, a Museum purchase from 1983, is part of the Hunter’s collection.
The Hunter Museum offers many exciting opportunities for members and their friends. Our travel program is just one of them. If you are interested in the upcoming Atlanta trip, or if you have questions about other travel opportunities, please call 423.752.2034.
